Stairway Redo and a Giveaway

When we first moved into our home 5 years ago, I was so disappointed with the stairway.  I had always dreamed of having a beautiful staircase and ours was just boring.  We always wanted to redo it but could never find the time.  However, hubby came home with some huge old barn beams the other day that ignited my fire again.  I was having trouble figuring out what to do with them until I saw this pic on Pinterest.
Our home isn't quite this rustic, and I don't really want it to be, but I really want to incorporate those barn beams into our stairway somehow like in this inspiration pic.  Here's a look at how it looks now.
That half wall is coming down and I'm gonna try to build some type of railing
incorporating a barn beam.  I've got some ideas and can't wait to see what I can come up with.  Of course, I might also be out of my mind by doing this. :)
The nasty carpet is also getting the boot.  Yay!
I'm so excited to take this stairway area from boring to beautiful.  Hopefully there won't be too many surprises when I remove the carpet and wall.  And hopefully it won't turn into a giant fail.  But I guess I'll never know unless I try, right?

And now for the giveaway!  To celebrate the milestone of 1000 members here and on Facebook and to say a big thank you for taking time out of your day to visit, I've decided to give away to one OVHL reader 1 set of my mini french bread board set and one large rustic walnut bread board,
as shown below:

To enter, all you have to do is leave a comment in the comment section below.  That's it!  The giveaway ends on Thursday night, January 19, and the winner will be announced Friday morning, January 20.

Have a great day everyone!

  11. I can't wait to see the transformation! What are you going to replace the carpet with?

I have stairs that are just kind of set between two walls, with a narrow railing; pretty boring, but at least out of sight.

  12. Thanks for entering me in your giveaway. I found your blog when I was looking for pictures of vintage ladders. For Christmas, my husband followed your excellent directions and made one for me. It came out so well that he is making one for my best friend's birthday. I look forward to each post and can't wait to see how your staircase turns out!

  22. I love, love, LOVE your blog and have used your kitchen as an example to redo mine! We had an unexpected water heater leak which (verrrry long story short...)destroyed our kitchen. Once the insurance guys came over by noon...the entire kitchen was GUTTED. Totally unexpected! I took advantage of this unfortunate situation to give the kitchen a new facelift. I found your blog and fell in love with your decorating style. I'm at the last phase of this project and would love, love, LOVE to add some of your darling breadboards as finishing touches!

  107. Diana,

Yesterday I stumbled on a blog where this lady said her New Year's resolution was to spend less time on "gawker". Gawker? I thought, what is this. I've used Pintrest but what is gawker? I'm so anti-tech and out of the loop, but I'm an old dog who still loves new tricks. Low and behold my new addiction. Have you used it yet? I haven't seen any of your beautiful photos yet on it, but I am a new comer. If you haven't (or readers out there), here's the info, go to http://gawkerverse.com. They have it divided in sections, "foodgawker, craftgawker, dwellingawker, weddinggawker. As they state, "A network of inspirational, user-submitted photo gallery sites". Wow, I thought I had lots of projects to do before, now my imagination is in overdrive. Be still, my gawking heart...
Hope you can put this site to use and spread the love on "Gawker". Love your passion. All the best from New Brunswick, Canada! Kathryn
